Equality and Diversity

Pearson in Practice is fully committed to advancing and promoting equality and diversity

Our Commitment

We believe that all forms of bullying, harassment and prejudice are unacceptable and we will seek to challenge this through robust policies, procedures and practices. Our commitment to equality and diversity informs all areas of our work by:

  • Ensuring that everyone is treated fairly and there is a clear understanding that equality is not about treating everyone the same, but recognising that each individual’s needs are met.

  • Complying with and, where appropriate, going beyond specific legal obligations in line with the 2010 Equality Act relating to nine protected characteristics: Gender, Gender Reassignment, Marriage or Civil Partnerships, Pregnancy or Maternity, Sexual Orientation, Disability, Race, Religion or Belief and Age.

  • Involving senior management, tutors, teachers, leaders, learners and stakeholders at all levels, in visible initiatives to embed, promote and advance equality of opportunity, and eliminate prejudice, racism, stereotyping, harassment, bullying and discrimination.

  • Promoting and advancing an ethos of continuous improvement, and supporting our desire to listen, to change, and to respect the opinions of all stakeholders.

  • Celebrating diversity with inductions, events, campaigns, forums, newsletters, bulletins, networks and other visible initiatives to develop a culture of zero tolerance on negative behaviours.

  • Recognising the benefits of employing both men and women at all levels of responsibility, and across all areas of work to create positive role models.

  • Recruiting a workforce and learners from different ethnic and religious backgrounds, to create a diverse learning and working environment.

  • Creating a working and learning environment that is free from offensive, pornographic or illegal images (hard copy or electronic).

  • Demonstrating good practice and embedding equality and diversity throughout the organisation, by challenging inappropriate behaviour and raising awareness of discrimination, harassment and bullying.

  • Delivering regular training sessions for staff to support their understanding of equality and diversity, and embedding equality and diversity into both staff and learner inductions, and across all curriculum areas.

  • Identifying and publishing a range of equality impact assessments against which we will assess ourselves annually, and identifying short-term focus measures that are prioritised at monthly management meetings in order to narrow gaps in achievement, and improve strategies for teaching and learning.

  • Assessing the likely or actual effects of policies, plans, procedures and practices in respect of the nine protected characteristics, in order to advance teaching and learning and to ensure that no individual is placed at a disadvantage.

  • Advancing equality of opportunity so that it is enshrined in our vision, values and mission, and ensure that each individual reaches their full potential regardless of their protected characteristic or socio-economic status.
